 These unique responsibilities make it critical that employees in these occupations not abuse drugs or alcohol. Some service companies or service clients wrongly believe that substance abuse is a problem only in industries that have "safety-sensitive" positions, or jobs requiring the operation of vehicles, machinery and tools.

However, the general services industry pays a high price for substance abuse. It is the nation's largest employer of people in "security-sensitive positions," jobs through which employees have access to financial records, maintain confidential information or are privy to a company's ideas or product plans. In addition all sectors have an extremely high employee turnover rate.

STATISTICS:

• Over 10% of employees with the Staffing Industry abuse drugs

• 18.5% of personnel professionals reported drug-taking incidents in the workplace (Institute of Personnel and Development, 2005)

• 48% of inventory shrinkage is due to employee theft (NRF)

• Employee theft is the only category of inventory shrinkage that continues to grow

• Studies have shown that up to 80% of employee theft is related to drug abuse
